History of Savannah Airport

On September 20, 1929, Eastern Air Express began service between New York and Miami from the newly opened Savannah Municipal Airport. In 1932, a local resolution officially designated the airport as Hunter Field.

In the 1930s, Hunter Field's first terminal was a trolley car. The United States Army Air Corps planned to seize control of Hunter Field in 1940 in the event of a war. Commercial aircraft continued to use Hunter Field, but the city constructed a second municipal airport due to the increased military presence.

Under a Works Progress Administration program, Savannah purchased a 600-acre plot of land close to Cherokee Hill, one of the county's highest elevations, and began building a new airfield there. Three runways spanning 3,600 feet were built, one each in the north-south, east-west, and northeast-southwest directions.

In 1942, the U.S. Army Air Corps opted to take over the new airfield and begin additional building to fulfill its goal. The airport was named "Chattan Field," and it was utilized as a B-24 bomber base and crew training base until the end of WWII.

The Georgia Air National Guard assumed control of Chatham Army Airfield in 1948. In memory of Brigadier General Robert F. Travis, a native of Savannah who died in a B-29 bomber crash near Fairfield-Suisun Air Force Base in California, and his brother, Colonel William Travis, the airport was renamed Travis Field.

Taking up the space of the old base theater, Travis Field now features an airline terminal and control tower. Construction on a brand-new airport terminal got underway in 1958. The runway length from east to west was increased to 9,000 feet in 1962 after another expansion was built (2,700 m).

In 1965, Delta Air Lines was the first major airline to begin operating Douglas DC-9-10 jetliners. Grumman Aircraft opened a $7.5 million Gulfstream manufacturing plant at Travis in 1967. In 1994, a brand-new terminal building costing $21 million was constructed in the airport's northwest quadrant.

The current terminal, which features only two gates, replaced a six-gate structure constructed in 1960. In 1983, it was renamed Savannah International Airport despite the lack of direct international flights. In 2003, it was renamed Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport.

During Savannah's first two centuries, the city's economy relied heavily on agriculture. Silk and indigo were early export goods, and both were in high demand in England. In 1767, over a ton of silk was shipped to England annually.

Cotton, which rose to prominence after the American Revolution, thrived in Georgia's temperate environment. European immigrants to Savannah benefited economically from its production under the plantation system and its export through the Port of Savannah.

Since the turn of the century, the Port of Savannah, manufacturing, the military, and tourism have all emerged as significant contributors to Savannah's economy. In 2006, nearly 6.85 million people visited Savannah, according to the Savannah Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.

The Bureau estimated that in 2011, the city saw 12.1 million visitors. More than 17,000 people are employed in the tourism industry, which includes the lodging, food and entertainment industries, and transportation.
